Accessibility
What has been done, and what has not.
Thelma is certified bilingual in English and American Sign Language, and an advocate for accessibility in music. It seemed wrong to say so on a site that had not earned it. So this page lists what the site actually does, and what it still owes.
Done
- Alt text on every image
- Written by a person, describing what is happening. The content schema refuses to publish an image without it, and there is no "decorative" checkbox to opt out with.
- Full keyboard navigation
- Every interactive element is reachable and operable by keyboard, in a sensible order, with a visible focus ring. The ring is one colour that clears the 3:1 contrast minimum against all five surfaces on this site, so it is never hidden and never suppressed.
- Reduced motion respected
- The site’s motion is derived from each chapter’s reverberation time. Under prefers-reduced-motion the transforms are removed entirely and only a 120ms fade remains. It is the same content, delivered still — not a degraded version.
- Text contrast beyond the minimum
- Body text runs at 11.5:1 to 17.3:1 against its background, well past the 4.5:1 required for AA. The brand’s accent colour cannot legally carry body text at all, so it never does.
- No autoplay, ever
- Video plays when you ask it to. Until then the page makes no request to YouTube at all, so watching her play does not cost you a tracker.
- Readable measure and type size
- Prose is set at 19px with a 62–72 character line. Larger than most sites, on purpose: this is reading, not scanning.
- Works without JavaScript
- The reflections render with scripting disabled. Her words are not conditional on a bundle loading.
Not yet
- Captions on the live video
- The Dorm Show recording has no caption track yet. The content schema requires one for any video added from now on; this one predates the site. It is being captioned.
- Transcripts for each Echo
- Planned. The reflections are short enough to read, but a transcript of the audio, once there is audio, is the standard.
